Sneak Peak at a monologue from the upcoming show Imposter:
This show is about the life of a successful business owner, who struggles with their identity in regard to their American Dream. This scene happens near the end of the show. The protagonist, who is 45, is giving their retirement speech at a retirement party. Everyone wants to learn about the path that will help them to retire young too.
Protagonist speaks:
Hello everyone. Thank you for coming. I assume you all think I’m here to talk about my successes: to give you advice on how you can retire at 45 too. Well… instead, and this may seem confusing, I actually wanna talk about some words…
The first word: Imposter. This word normally has a negative connotation correct? Someone “who doesn’t belong in a certain group but is there anyways.” Would if I were to tell you that I’m an imposter? You would change your view to think negatively of me most likely. Maybe this would even alter your view on my reliability as the owner of this company.
How about Unity? This normally has a positive connotation, correct? The bringing of people together, harmony. Well that’s my American Dream.
I live each day striving for a dream that I do not see coming to fruition in my lifetime. I make strides toward a unified America everyday, but how can this be possible when the “American Dream” is about exclusively personal gain.
So would you say this makes me an imposter? Living everyday a part of this American Dream system when I do not think I belong or “believe” in this definition of the “American Dream?”
… Words have different meanings for everyone…
So my advice… strive for the best life possible for yourself, but this doesn’t have to be at the expense of everyone around you. In doing this… maybe just maybe… the view of the American Dream will change from exclusive to inclusive and one day my American Dream will come to fruition. Thank you. I wish you all the best in your futures… whatever that may look like.
