Plot Summary

When polar opposites Avery and Marcus interview for the same job at an accounting firm, they are both hired as interns and put to the test to see which person does a better job. Butting heads and sabotage make working together impossible, which only hurts the client. Can they put their differences aside and work together to complete their assignment?

Synopsis

Avery Adams, in her mid-20s, grew up with a single father whose financial struggles left her with inherited money anxieties. Marcus Hart, early 20s, was raised by an immigrant father and American mother who both worked multiple jobs to stay afloat, instilling a fierce work ethic in him.

Both apply for an entry-level position at Summit Ledger & Co, a top U.S. accounting firm. Unable to choose between them, the firm makes them compete as interns. Tensions rise as they engage in sabotage and fierce competition.

Their supervisor, Mark, assigns them a “trial case”: Heather, a single mother seeking financial counseling. Though unaware they’re working on the same case, Marcus grows suspicious of its realism and meets Heather, learning she was denied help for no clear reason. Avery discovers the same troubling pattern — Summit Ledger routinely denies services to women.

Realizing the injustice, they set aside their rivalry and decide to help Heather. Working together, they bond over shared experiences and discuss deeper life goals. Marcus admits his drive comes from wanting to surpass his parents’ struggles. Avery challenges the views of success they hold; she questions why this is a shared motivation of hardworking children. Why is it so ingrained in American children that their success is tied to surpassing their parents? Avery understands his feelings but tells him that his life is not measured by his parent’s successes. This conversation leaves Marcus thinking: what does he want in life?

On pitch day, they present Heather’s case while hiding her identity for protection. Marcus, inspired by his new outlook, withdraws from the internship, recommending Avery for the job. She is hired, determined to make change from within, while Marcus sets out to discover what success truly means for himself.
