I was born in the midwest. Both of my parents were graduate students. We moved back to the Islands when I was 2, so I have almost no memories of the States as a child.
For me, the American Dream is about being able to access opportunities that otherwise I wouldn’t be able to access. Ironically, I don’t think I would have had access to the American Dream if I had grown up here. If you are a person of color in the United States, there really is not a way to access the same level of opportunity that white people have, no matter how hard you try.
But I don’t think that the American Dream is attainable or even possible for most Americans. I don’t think it ever was. The American Dream is a tool of capitalism to ensure you keep working. You are sold the idea that if you work hard enough, you will attain enough and you will be able to live the way that you want to live. However… I don’t think that was actually ever true, even for white people.
