T is a high school history teacher, shaping the minds of tomorrow. By being someone who constantly looks into the past, she tries to create an environment where you can think about the future and realize that you don’t necessarily need to follow traditions for everything.
T is also a mother, a wife, and a yoga instructor. As a yoga instructor, T is learning from other cultures how they find their version of enlightenment or peace to be an addition to her already successful life. As a mother, T is more of a hands-off parent by allowing her kids to make their own “playdates” and letting them learn from their own mistakes. As a wife, T is committed to having an equal relationship with her partner in which they can have their own lives and can both work.
T is a prime example that shows not everyone holds the same values to reach the idea of “THE American Dream.”
To show each aspect of T’s values compared to the traditional values, I decided to portray it as an ode to Michelle Obama’s “My Plate” as an infographic with art in the background being the iconic American painting, American Gothic by Grant Wood. Everyone has a full plate but not everyone has the same foods on their plate that make them full. One aspect that is on the traditional plate as opposed to T’s plate is financial stability. Although T sees being financially stable as important, it would not be on her plate because money does not buy happiness. Not everyone has to have the same American Dream to find happiness because we are all not the same.
