Growing up, I felt really ashamed of being Asian. My mom is a nurse and my dad is in information technology. They changed their accents at work because people didn’t take them seriously despite having years of experience.
I heard them change their voice in phone meetings. They minimized their ethnicity to reap the opportunities and the rewards of the American Dream, which seems like the opposite of the Dream.
My parents are probably one of many people who think that this is just the norm, or that this is how it’s always going to be and that there’s nothing we can do about it. But no one should stand for that.
